Regardless of how your child’s school year is going to look or where it is going to take place, we want to help you set your child up for success! We know the back to school shopping and preparing list can seem daunting so here are a few things to not overlook.

Proper work station:

Set your child up for success this year with a workstation designed around them!  Whether they are homeschooling, virtual learning or doing homework they will work better in their customized space. When setting up a work station for your child (or yourself for that matter) try to follow the 90 degree rule.  This means hips, knees, and elbows should rest comfortably as close to 90 degrees as possible.

To achieve this this may mean you will need to raise your screen or possibly raise your feet.  A laptop stand and foot stool work great in achieving this as they are not permanent and can be adjusted as your child grows.  You can also adjust them to allow for some standing desk time.

Blue light filter:

First off, why filter blue light?  Well for starters, we don’t want to put any unnecessary strain on our eyes.

Second, blue light can affect sleep by suppressing the production of Melatonin (sleep-inducing hormone).

If you or your child are going to be at the screen for an extending period of time you may want to consider blue light filtering glasses.  If you aren’t sure how much screen time will be required yet or even if you just want experiment most laptops these days allow you to set the blue light you would like under the “night light” setting.

Proper nerve supply:

Changes in routines and circumstances can add stress to our children’s lives.  Sometimes we don’t even realize it is happening.   Think of the nervous system as a circuit breaker panel.  When it can no longer handle the stress load circuits trip.  In your body we call these subluxations.  Subluxations, in the upper portion of a child’s neck in particular, can often contribute to things such as attention issues (add/adhd), poor sleep quality, irritability or even discomfort.

We know many families have been feeling the affects and stress of all the uncertainty lately.  If there is anything we can do to help set your child up for success this year please reach out!  We are here for you and will do anything we can to help.

I look forward to celebrating the many victories of our children with you this school year!

Yours in health,

Dr. Katie
